The leading low-cost airline in India, IndiGo Airlines, has introduced a new option that lets female customers choose whether they would like seat next to other women.
Recently, IndiGo began an experiment that gives customers this choice when choosing a seat at the time of booking. It is made easy for other female passengers to chose to sit next to reserved women by designating them with a color code, usually pink. Men who are making reservations won’t be able to view this information and hence won’t be able to use it to make contact since this option is only available to women. IndiGo’s claim that it wants to “enhance the travel experience for our female passengers” was used by CNN to highlight this feature. The program is a component of IndiGo’s larger #GirlPower campaign, which advocates for the empowerment of women.
On March 8, International Women’s Day, IndiGo proudly declared that it employs a substantial number of female pilots—among the highest in the world—in its workforce.

This project, albeit still in the trial phase, is not wholly surprising in India, where women-only sections on buses and trains are already available to assure their comfort.
