Delhi’s IGI Airport ranked tenth in a 2023 international survey by the Airports Council International (ACI) World. The airport handled 72.2 million travelers, a 20.36% increase from the previous year. However, it slipped behind Chicago and missed securing the ninth position it previously achieved in 2022. The global aviation sector is gradually returning to pre-pandemic levels.
Delhi’s IGI Airport ranked tenth. This came from a 2023 international survey of bustling airports. The Airports Council International (ACI) World conducted this survey.
According to the numbers, about 72.2 million travelers passed through Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. This shows a steady annual increase of 20.36%, which highlights India’s thriving airline sector. However, Delhi Airport’s rank stumbled a bit; it slipped behind Chicago and narrowly missed securing the ninth position that it previously achieved in 2022.
ACI disclosed the globe’s most bustling airports for 2023, signaling a shift in the aviation landscape due to rising overseas travel. ACI World’s Director General, Luis Felipe de Oliveira, highlighted that several factors would mainly push the global aspect of air transport in 2023.
Guess what? The comeback is in full swing! Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport holds its crown as the world’s hustle and bustle hub. But there’s a twist! Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, once third in line, was overtaken! Who outpaced them? None is other than Dubai International Airport, now sitting comfortably in the second place.
Delhi Airport was still one of the busiest airports in the world in 2022, although it was no longer in the top 10. Oliveira made the following observation about this scenario: “The unwavering strength of Istanbul and New Delhi airports keeps them in top ranks, marking significant progress over 2019.”
In 2023, Delhi’s IGI Airport saw a striking jump of 20.36% from the previous year, handling over 72.2 million passengers. This growth suggests India’s aviation industry is rebounding with strength. However, records hint at a slight drop from ninth in 2022. It seems Chicago O’Hare Airport had the upper hand over Delhi in 2023.
Global aviation trends show that the sector is gradually returning to pre-pandemic levels. A remarkable 93.8% return from pre-pandemic levels (2019) and a 27.2% rise from 2022 saw passenger traffic soar to over 8.5 billion in 2023.
The ACI ranking system provides essential insights into airport performance and travel demand by using data from over 2,600 airports worldwide. Meanwhile, Delhi Airport’s continued ranking in the top 10 in the world reflects both its important role as a major international hub and its substantial contribution to global connectivity.
