Patna’s metro rail project is set to begin operations on August 15, 2025, as announced by Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary in the state assembly on Thursday. With the upcoming assembly elections next year, the completion of this metro rail will significantly boost Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s development agenda.
Choudhary made the statement following the presentation of the appropriation Bill, which outlines the allocation of the second supplementary budget amounting to Rs 32,506.90 crore for the 2024-25 financial year, concluding on March 31, 2025.
The supplementary budget and the related appropriation Bill were approved by the House through a voice vote, with no opposition members present to oppose the motion. The opposition had earlier staged a walkout in protest, citing the government’s failure to address their demand to halt the installation of smart prepaid meters.
The government’s refusal to respond to this demand led to the disruption, as opposition members left the chamber before the vote took place. Despite the absence of their voices, the Bill was successfully passed, securing the necessary approval for the allocation of funds for the upcoming financial year.
The House held a debate earlier on the second supplementary budget, focusing on the Rs 3,028.91 crore allocated to the social welfare department. The discussion was initiated by CPI(ML) member Ajay Kumar.
In response to the debate, Minister Madan Sahani addressed the House, highlighting the results of various government schemes by presenting the number of beneficiaries. He emphasized that these initiatives had also provided significant benefits to the extremely backward castes, underlining the government’s commitment to inclusive development.
