For the fourth year in a row, Paris has claimed the title of the world’s most desirable city destination, as revealed by Euromonitor’s 2024 rankings. European cities continue to lead the charge, benefitting from robust tourism infrastructure. As global tourism experiences a remarkable resurgence, cities are increasingly prioritizing sustainable tourism approaches to handle growth and mitigate the impact of overtourism.
Paris has been crowned the world’s most appealing city destination for the fourth straight year, according to Euromonitor International’s 2024 Top 100 City Destinations Index. The report assesses global urban destinations based on 55 indicators spanning six key areas: economic and business performance, tourism success, infrastructure, policy and appeal, health and safety, and sustainability.
European cities claimed six of the top 10 positions, with Madrid securing second place, Tokyo in third, and Rome and Milan following in fourth and fifth, respectively. The rise of non-European cities was also notable. The continued success of European destinations can be attributed to their solid tourism infrastructure, which has played a key role in maintaining their strong rankings.
International arrivals worldwide increased by 19% in 2024, signaling a robust demand for travel. Europe remained the top destination, drawing 793 million international visits. Bangkok topped the global rankings with 32 million arrivals, exceeding pre-pandemic numbers. Meanwhile, global tourism expenditures reached a total of USD 1.9 trillion.
In response to overtourism, cities have begun introducing entry fees, encouraging year-round visitation, and incentivizing sustainable practices. These initiatives, alongside the integration of AI-driven technologies, are transforming urban tourism strategies as destinations work to achieve a balance between growth and responsible travel.
