Air New Zealand to launch Technical Demonstrator Programme with Electric Aircraft in 2025

Air New Zealand’s ambition to pioneer electric aviation in Aotearoa takes a significant leap forward with the announcement of a Technical Demonstrator Programme.

The airline will operate a battery-electric ALIA CX300 aircraft, developed by U.S.-based partner BETA Technologies, starting mid-2025.

The program, based in Hamilton and Wellington, marks a major milestone in the airline’s journey toward zero-emissions aviation.

Early Introduction of ALIA Aircraft

The ALIA CX300 will arrive in New Zealand a year ahead of its scheduled commercial cargo services between Wellington and Blenheim, set to begin in 2026.

This early deployment will enable Air New Zealand to evaluate the aircraft’s performance in local conditions, train pilots and crew, and introduce the technology to the wider New Zealand public.

Initially operating out of Hamilton Airport, the ALIA aircraft will conduct a series of proving flights before expanding operations to surrounding airports.

The programme will culminate with flights to Wellington, simulating the cargo operations planned for 2026 in partnership with New Zealand Post.

Advancing Aviation Sustainability

Kiri Hannifin, Air New Zealand’s Chief Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer, emphasized the airline’s commitment to reducing emissions through innovative solutions.

“We are thrilled to take this step into the next generation of aviation, connecting New Zealanders while significantly lowering emissions. Bringing the ALIA CX300 to Aotearoa early gives us an incredible opportunity to showcase what the future of domestic air travel can look like,” said Hannifin.

She also highlighted the programme’s role in preparing the airline for the aircraft’s commercial introduction in 2026, noting that Air New Zealand pilots will work closely with BETA pilots to gain operational experience.

Strategic Partnership with BETA Technologies

BETA Technologies’ founder and CEO, Kyle Clark, praised Air New Zealand’s collaborative approach to integrating the new technology.

“Air New Zealand’s practical, operations-focused partnership has set solid foundations for successful entry into service. The Technical Demonstrator and chargers will help us collect critical data and refine operations, enabling the airline to launch cost-effective electric services seamlessly in 2026,” said Clark.

Infrastructure for Electric Aviation

To support the programme, Air New Zealand has invested in mobile charging stations through its Climate and Nature Fund.

These 60kW chargers, stationed at Hamilton, Wellington, and Blenheim airports, will fully recharge the aircraft in approximately 90 minutes, ensuring operational readiness.

Future-Ready Aviation

The ALIA CX300 is Air New Zealand’s smallest and most innovative fleet addition, reflecting its commitment to sustainable aviation.

The programme marks a pivotal step in the airline’s efforts to meet its 2050 net-zero carbon emissions target while inspiring the future of air travel in Aotearoa.
