Thailand Greets Its 2 Millionth Indian Tourist Of 2024 Setting New Records For Travel Growth

Thailand celebrates a tourism milestone with the arrival of its 2,000,000th Indian visitor in 2024, highlighting India’s vital role in its thriving tourism industry.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) celebrated a landmark moment on December 16, 2024, with the arrival of the year’s 2,000,000th Indian visitor at Suvarnabhumi Airport. This milestone highlights the growing importance of India as a major source market for Thailand’s flourishing tourism sector.

The occasion was marked by a grand ceremony attended by prominent dignitaries, including Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports; H.E. Nagesh Singh, Ambassador of India to Thailand; Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor; Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and the South Pacific; and representatives from Suvarnabhumi Airport and Thai Airways International (THAI).

A Warm Thai Welcome for Indian Tourists

Passengers arriving on THAI flight TG324 from Delhi were greeted with vibrant celebrations and traditional Thai garlands, symbolizing the nation’s renowned hospitality. Among the arrivals was Chetan Gupta, the 2,000,000th Indian visitor, who expressed joy at being part of this milestone event.

Sorawong Thienthong emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome our 2,000,000th Indian tourist this year. This accomplishment underscores the strong cultural and economic ties between our nations and reflects the growing popularity of Thailand among Indian travelers. We remain committed to offering exceptional experiences to all our visitors.”

TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool highlighted the success of strategic marketing initiatives, adding, “This milestone is a testament to our dedication to the Indian market. By enhancing connectivity and launching targeted campaigns, we aim to position Thailand as the top destination for Indian travelers, offering tailored experiences and unparalleled hospitality.”

India’s Contribution to Thailand’s Tourism Success

India has emerged as one of Thailand’s most significant tourism markets. The surpassing of the 2-million visitor mark this year builds on the momentum of 2019, when 1.96 million Indian tourists contributed 80 billion Baht in revenue. By 2023, Indian arrivals had rebounded to 1.63 million, generating 61.9 billion Baht.

Popular destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, Chon Buri, Krabi, and Phang-nga continue to attract Indian travelers, while emerging hotspots like Surat Thani and Kanchanaburi are also gaining traction. From indulging in Thai cuisine and vibrant nightlife to enjoying pristine beaches, massages, and historical landmarks, Indian tourists embrace a wide range of activities year-round.

Enhanced Connectivity Drives Growth

Thailand’s robust air connectivity with India has played a pivotal role in this success. By June 2024, there were 342 weekly flights connecting the two nations, offering 2.9 million seats annually—equivalent to 92.2% of pre-pandemic levels. New routes, such as Indigo’s Hyderabad-Bangkok service, THAI’s Kochi-Bangkok flights, and Thai AirAsia’s Vishakhapatnam-Bangkok connection, have further strengthened accessibility.

Adding to this convenience is Thailand’s visa exemption policy, allowing Indian tourists to stay for up to 60 days. This policy, combined with targeted marketing efforts and collaborations with travel partners, has solidified Thailand’s position as a premier destination for Indian travelers.

Looking Ahead

As Thailand continues to welcome Indian visitors in record numbers, the partnership between the two nations remains a driving force in the region’s tourism resurgence. With its unique blend of cultural richness, scenic beauty, and world-class hospitality, Thailand is poised to remain a top choice for Indian travelers in the years to come.
