Sri Lanka celebrated a significant advancement in its tourism sector on December 12 with the inauguration and handover of the Tourist Service Centre and Welcome Centre in Habarana. This initiative, launched in partnership with the Republic of Korea in 2021, aims to foster sustainable tourism and uplift local communities.
The event was graced by prominent figures including North Central Province Governor Wasantha Kumara Wimalasiri, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism S. L. Nazeer, and Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam. Representing Korea were Jung Sohngyee, Deputy Head of Mission from the Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka, and Park Jung Woong from the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO).
The roots of this initiative date back to 2019 when an SLTDA official earned recognition at a tourism content development competition hosted by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) in Korea. What began as an ambitious vision has now been realized, making this milestone particularly meaningful.
Despite the challenges of the global pandemic and economic hardships faced by the country, the project successfully accomplished its goals in three key areas: (i) promoting community-based tourism, (ii) enhancing skills through capacity-building programs, and (iii) improving infrastructure, including the establishment of a tourist service center and the launch of an online information platform to boost accessibility.
Officials from the Ministry of Tourism, SLTDA, and the North Central Province Council, along with local communities involved in the initiative, expressed their gratitude for the project and contributed their unwavering support throughout its execution.
