Japan Hit With Overtourism As Airports And Train Stations Packed Post 9-Day New Year Celebrations 4

Airports and major train stations across Japan buzzed with activity on Saturday as travelers left urban centers to reunite with family and explore other destinations during the extended New Year holiday, which lasts up to nine days.

A fire near the tracks in Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, caused temporary suspension of Shinkansen bullet train services between Shin-Osaka and Okayama stations in western Japan, according to JR West. The disruption also impacted connecting train routes.

Westbound Shinkansen trains departing Tokyo were nearly at full capacity, while domestic flights operated by Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport had limited availability, with most seats already booked.

Highway operators anticipate over 200 traffic congestions spanning 10 kilometers or more across the nation during the nine-day holiday period, which includes weekends, running from Saturday through January 5.
