On January 12, 2025, ITA Airways reinstated direct flights between Rome Fiumicino and Tripoli Mitiga, marking the first such connection by a major Western European airline in ten years.
The inaugural flight was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Fiumicino Airport’s Terminal 3, attended by notable figures including ENAC President Pierluigi Di Palma, ITA Airways executives, and Libyan Ambassador to Italy, Muhanad Saeid Younus.
This development follows a period of suspended flights due to civil unrest in Libya.
The resumption of this route is expected to strengthen commercial and cultural ties between Italy and Libya, enhancing connectivity and supporting bilateral relations.
ITA Airways plans to operate two direct flights per week on this route.
ENAC President Pierluigi Di Palma remarked, “New opportunities are opening up between the two countries thanks to ENAC’s commitment, with the support of AISE and the Italian Embassy in Tripoli.”
The renewed air link is anticipated to serve as a strategic bridge, reinforcing Rome’s position as a hub for African connectivity.
In 2024, passenger traffic between Rome and Africa exceeded 2 million, marking a 38% increase over the previous year
