Air India Express fuels expansion with increased flights from Kolkata and Bagdogra, while delaying direct Dhaka service due to ongoing political uncertainty.
Air India Express, the low-cost subsidiary of Air India, is undergoing a major expansion with plans to increase its fleet and launch new routes in response to strong passenger demand. However, the airline has postponed its plan to introduce direct flights between Kolkata and Dhaka due to the ongoing political situation in Bangladesh.
Currently, Air India Express operates 24 daily flights from Kolkata, a number set to rise by 10 during the upcoming summer schedule. These additions will consist of new routes as well as frequency increases on existing ones.
The frequency of weekly flights from Kolkata and Bagdogra has surged by 37%, growing from 168 flights last winter to over 230. New direct flights from Kolkata will connect to Port Blair, Indore, and Agartala, while Bagdogra will see new services to Hyderabad and Chennai.
With a fleet of 90 aircraft, including 61 Boeing 737s and 29 Airbus A320s, Air India Express operates more than 400 daily flights, serving 36 domestic and 15 international destinations. The airline holds a 12% market share in Kolkata, rising to 24% when combined with its parent company, Air India.
