Bhutan’s Tourism Department has lifted the compulsory travel insurance mandate for visitors, aiming to simplify travel protocols and improve convenience. The move aims to attract more tourists to Bhutan’s unique culture and landscapes. Indian passport holders can enter without a visa but must obtain entrance permission from the Phuentsholing Immigration Office.
To cover unplanned situations, especially pandemic-related medical costs, this provision was first implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the department has chosen to waive this duty in light of the improved circumstances and as part of its efforts to provide passengers with more seamless travel experiences.
The move is intended to simplify travel protocols and improve convenience for foreign visitors to the nation. The agency nevertheless advises travelers to get travel insurance as a preventive step, even if it is no longer required to obtain visas. This is to make sure they have sufficient coverage in the unusual event that they have to go abroad and have an emergency.
Bhutan intends to streamline the visa application process and entice more tourists to experience its distinctive culture, landscapes, and legacy by doing away with the necessity for travel insurance. Because of the close diplomatic links between Bhutan and India, Indian passport holders are permitted entry into the country without a visa. It is one of the rare countries that has good ties and a border with India.
Those with Indian passports who want to go to Bhutan must get entrance permission from the Phuentsholing Immigration Office. Travelers entering Bhutan by road must have this permission, which is valid for seven days, and produce it at each checkpoint for verification. Nevertheless, to remain longer than the first seven days, visitors must go to the immigration office in Thimphu and apply to extend the validity of their permission. Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, acts as the administrative hub where these additions may be handled. For Indian nationals, the entrance permit granted by the Bhutan Immigration Department is free of charge.
