Sikkim tourism sector saw a record-breaking 290,401 visitors at the beginning of 2024, largely because of its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and picturesque locations. The recovery of the hospitality sector, despite flash flood damage, contributed to the increase. The state’s diverse ethnic populations and year-round pleasant weather make it an attractive destination.

According to data from the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, up till March 31, 2024, Sikkim received a record-breaking 290,401 tourists—256,537 domestic visitors and 30,864 foreign visitors. The recovery of Sikkim’s hospitality sector, which was severely damaged by the catastrophic flash floods in October 2023, is credited with this increase.

The number of tourists visiting Sikkim has steadily increased during the last ten years, from 576,749 in 2013 to 1,625,573 in 2023. Estimates indicate that after a robust start in 2024, the attraction would welcome 1.2 million visitors by the end of the year if the present growth rate is maintained.

One of the main reasons for the increase in foot traffic is Sikkim’s rich cultural diversity. Sikkim is home to a variety of ethnic populations, including the Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepalese. Its festivals, customs, and food all honor its rich past. The state is also an all-season attraction due to its year-round pleasant weather.
