China’s Ice City Harbin Heats Up for the Largest Asian Winter Games in History

Harbin, the Ice City, is buzzing with excitement as it enters the final countdown to the 9th Asian Winter Games, set to dazzle with record participation this February.

Harbin Gears Up for the 9th Asian Winter Games With a Month to Go

Harbin, famously known as “Ice City,” is buzzing with anticipation as it counts down the final month to the 9th Asian Winter Games. On Tuesday, the city marked the milestone with mascots welcoming visitors and showcasing its meticulously prepared competition venues.

A beloved winter tourism hotspot in Northeast China, Harbin is set to shine brighter this February as it readies itself to host the Games, which officially commence on February 7. The capital of Heilongjiang province is leveraging its extensive winter sports infrastructure and drawing on its experience from hosting the event in 1996 to ensure a seamless and memorable edition in 2025.

This year’s Games promise to be historic, with 34 national Olympic committees participating — the largest representation ever. For the first time, Cambodia and Saudi Arabia will join the competition, highlighting the event’s growing appeal across Asia.

More than 1,275 athletes are set to compete in 64 medal events spanning six sports through February 14. The program includes exciting debuts for mixed doubles curling, ski mountaineering, and synchronized freestyle skiing aerials, bringing fresh energy to the long-standing tournament.

World-Class Venues Ready for Action

Harbin has spared no effort in preparing its facilities to meet international standards. Thirteen venues — five for ice sports in Harbin’s urban center and eight for snow events in Yabuli, a renowned ski resort 200 kilometers away — have undergone extensive renovations and equipment upgrades. Following a series of seven test events last year, organizers are fine-tuning operations to ensure top-notch experiences for athletes and spectators alike.

Opening Ceremony to Set the Stage for an Unforgettable Event

The opening ceremony, directed by Sha Xiaolan, who masterminded the acclaimed opening and closing ceremonies of the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, is poised to be a spectacle. Set to take place at the Main Media Center, the ceremony has already undergone rehearsals, promising a visually stunning start to this prestigious event.

As Harbin enters the final stretch, the city’s enthusiasm is palpable. Combining its rich cultural heritage with modern sports excellence, the Ice City is ready to make the 9th Asian Winter Games an event to remember.
