On September 24, 2024, Krip Rojanastien, the Chairman and CEO of Chiva-Som International Health Resorts and a prominent figure in the wellness industry, presented his vision for “Multi-Generational Family Wellness and Sustainability” at the 17th annual SpaChina Summit 2024—a premier event in the global wellness calendar. Invited as a VIP speaker by Fifi Kao, Editor-in-Chief of SpaChina and Founder and Director of the Summit, Krip addressed an audience of 400 members from the international wellness community.
In his presentation, Krip emphasized the essential role of family wellness in sustainable living, sharing insights drawn from his experiences as the custodian of Chiva-Som, a legacy that spans three generations. Chiva-Som, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025, has championed a sustainable, holistic approach to wellness, nurturing the mind, body, and spirit. Its philosophy centers on the belief that wellness and sustainability are deeply interconnected; true sustainable wellness is about fostering healthy lifestyle habits that endure over time, supporting both individual wellbeing and longevity through mindful, nature-aligned living. It also means taking active steps to conserve, preserve, and regenerate natural environments and to support the wider community.
Chiva-Som’s commitment to wellness and sustainability is driven by a recognition of critical global challenges—from food and water scarcity to climate change, which disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations, as well as non-communicable diseases (NCDs) linked to air and plastic pollution and the spread of unhealthy lifestyles. Krip highlighted the urgent need for a cultural shift to confront these challenges, emphasizing the importance of early education to renew our connection to nature and reinforce the interdependence of planetary and human health.
Education, Krip stated, is pivotal to addressing issues from nutrition to waste management and supporting a healthy aging population, creating a better world for future generations. The wellness industry, he noted, has a unique potential to drive this change. Chiva-Som actively supports a culture of family wellness, especially through its latest endeavor, the Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som in Qatar. Launched in 2022 on the scenic northern coast of Qatar in Khasooma, Zulal introduces sustainable wellness practices to a new community, offering an innovative family wellness program and standing as the first integrated wellness resort to incorporate Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine (TAIM).
Krip said: ‘Family units that treat ‘good nutrition’ as just ‘nutrition’. Recycling the rubbish with the kids. The sensible use of screen time. Making a post-dinner family walk a regular activity. Building sustainability and wellness into the family’s core values that sink in and get passed on.
Well-balanced children grow into well-balanced adults. Empowered children grow into empowered adults. There must be the recognition of parenting and the reassessment of work ethics, asset accumulation and pursuit of the dollar as the measure of success…. It is crucial that wellness knowledge and understanding be built in the child’s mind during their formative periods and is aimed to last a lifetime’.
Krip’s vision for creating a lasting legacy—both within his own family and by inspiring the next generation of leaders in the wellness industry—is rooted in the values passed down by his father, Boonchu Rojanastien, the founder of Chiva-Som. After taking the reins in 2007, Krip expanded the world-class reputation of the flagship resort in Hua Hin, Thailand, transforming it into a global brand dedicated to sustainable wellness.
Krip shared his experiences with fellow industry leaders managing family businesses, explaining how his son, Win Rojanastien, has taken on a leadership role at Chiva-Som. With six years of hands-on experience within the company, Win has risen through the ranks, bringing his background as a qualified architect from New York to contribute to Chiva-Som’s continued growth and vision. ‘Just as families must manage their growth by thinking well beyond the immediate, so our planet’s future and our children’s future all depend on the legacy we leave behind. The seeds we plant today will provide shelter for the generations we may never see, but that is what we must do’.
The annual SpaChina Wellness Summit is a three-day gathering for spa professionals, owners, investors, and brands offering spa products and equipment. This event serves as a vital platform for key figures in China’s wellness and spa industry to connect and collaborate. Complementing the summit, the SpaChina Wellness & Spa Awards celebrate industry leaders and innovators, recognizing excellence and promoting high-quality standards across China’s wellness and spa sectors.
