Dense fog leads to major delays at Delhi Airport as cold grips North India, disrupting life and travel.
Thick fog in Delhi has caused extensive flight delays at Indira Gandhi International Airport early Thursday. The India Meteorological Department measured the temperature at 12.6 degrees Celsius at 5:30 am.
The Central Pollution Control Board noted an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 262 at 8 am, indicating that the air quality was poor.
To safeguard vulnerable groups, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board has established 235 night shelters to accommodate the homeless during the severe winter season.
In Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, visibility was severely hampered by dense fog as well, affecting the thousands attending the Mahakumbh festival at the Sangam for sacred ceremonies. The recorded temperature there was 12.8 degrees Celsius at the same time.
Similar foggy conditions were reported in regions of West Bengal and Odisha.
The fog impacted Sainthia Junction railway station in West Bengal and the North 24 Parganas area significantly.
Meanwhile, a persistent cold wave grips Kashmir, with Srinagar’s temperature dipping to -0.5 degrees Celsius this morning.
The IMD predicts that rain might occur later today in Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR, and northern Rajasthan.
