The European Union’s new Schengen visa fees will increase by 12% from June 11, 2024, to €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12. The Slovenian government stated that the increase is intended to counteract rising member state staff pay and inflation. The European Commission has reviewed and adjusted fees every three years, with the most recent revision in February 2020. The new Schengen visa costs for adults range from INR 7,267 to INR 8,175, while children range from €40 to €45. The Schengen Visa region includes 29 European countries.

Effective June 11, 2024, the European Commission agreed to increase the worldwide charge for a Schengen visa (type C) for short stays by 12%. The Slovenian government has stated that the new costs are €90 for adults and €45 for youngsters aged 6 to under 12. In addition, citizens of nations that do not cooperate with readmission and who enter the country irregularly will be charged a €135 or €180 visa fee.

Explanations Given For The Rise

According to the Commission, the price increase is intended to counteract growing member state staff pay and inflation. Every three years, fees are reviewed and adjusted; the most recent revision was done in February 2020. This adjustment is in line with a 36.3 percent rise in visa applications in 2023 over 2022, while the numbers are still below the 16 million pre-COVID levels from 2019.

India’s new visa policy

A new visa policy for India was implemented in April, granting multi-year visas with a maximum five-year validity to frequent Indian travelers. After acquiring and legitimately using two visas in the preceding three years, Indian people are now eligible to apply for long-term, multiple-entry Schengen visas that are good for two years. Indians do not need separate visas to visit and depart Schengen nations several times while the visa is valid.

Schengen Visa Region

With the exception of Ireland and Cyprus, the majority of EU members as well as non-EU nations like Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland are included in the Schengen Area, which also encompasses Romania and Bulgaria’s land borders. For tourist or family trips, non-EU nationals from South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and China need a Schengen visa, which allows stays of up to 90 days during a six-month period. Due to their right to 90 days of visa-free travel in each 180-day period, citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia do not need a Schengen visa for short trips; however, longer stays or work visits need the use of separate visas.
