Tourism Potential in Gandaki Province Awaits Exploration and International Promotion

Stakeholders have emphasized the urgent need to unlock the untapped tourism potential of Gandaki Province.

During a program organized by the Foreign Ministry on economic diplomacy on Monday, participants highlighted that although the province boasts numerous tourist destinations, many remain unexplored and lack global visibility. They stressed that fully harnessing these tourism opportunities and informing the international market about the region’s attractions would not only generate employment but also significantly contribute to the provincial economy.

Collaboration and active involvement from all three tiers of government were identified as essential for achieving these goals.

Joint Secretary of the Foreign Ministry, Laxman Khanal, called for unified efforts to promote tourism in Gandaki Province. The ministry has already initiated various programs to enhance Nepal’s tourism presence in the global market, though further facilitation and efforts are still required to achieve the desired results.

Kulman Singh Gurung, Secretary at the provincial tourism ministry, stated that promoting tourism activities could significantly boost employment. The ministry is actively working in collaboration with multiple organizations to achieve this goal.

Meanwhile, Nabin Pokhrel, the officiating chief of the Nepal Tourism Board in the province, outlined the board’s strategic plans to boost tourism activities in the region. He also recalled the historic first ascent of Annapurna-I by French mountaineer Maurice Herzog, which brought international attention to the area. Pokhrel highlighted key tourist destinations such as Kaligandaki and Dhorpatan, emphasizing the need for stakeholders to work collectively on data collection, infrastructure development, and embracing tourism diversity.

Krishna Prasad Acharya, Chairman of the Trekking Agencies Association Nepal (TAAN), underscored the role of Nepal’s diplomatic missions abroad in promoting tourism in the country.

The stakeholders collectively reiterated the importance of joint efforts, infrastructure building, and innovative strategies to position Gandaki Province as a leading tourism destination.
