By the end of December, Indian Railways plans to introduce a comprehensive mobile app that will consolidate multiple services, including ticket booking, food delivery, and train status, into one platform. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the app will also be integrated with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to streamline access for travelers.
Comprehensive app set to provide an extensive range of services
The forthcoming super app aims to consolidate various services, allowing users to book passenger and platform tickets and check train status all in one place. At present, passengers depend on several separate official apps or websites, such as IRCTC Rail Connect for ticket booking, modifications, and cancellations; IRCTC eCatering Food on Track for onboard food delivery; Rail Madad for submitting complaints or suggestions; UTS for unreserved ticket bookings; and the National Train Enquiry System to monitor train schedules.
IRCTC’s involvement in the development of the new super app
A senior official informed ET that IRCTC will remain the primary interface between CRIS and passengers purchasing train tickets. The integration of IRCTC with the forthcoming super app is currently underway. This initiative aligns with IRCTC’s strategy to enhance its services and increase revenue, viewing the super app as an additional income stream.
IRCTC’s revenue performance and exclusive control over ticketing
For the fiscal year 2023-24, IRCTC reported a net profit of ₹1,111.26 crore, supported by a revenue of ₹4,270.18 crore. Ticketing contributed 30.33% of this revenue, with over 453 million tickets booked during the year, as outlined in the company’s annual report. The new super app is expected to enhance these figures by providing passengers with a unified, more efficient platform to access multiple services.
