The Ministry of Textile’s handloom department is evaluating a proposal from the Madhya Pradesh state tourism department to establish a craft village in Maheshwar, located in Khargone district. This initiative is currently under consideration, according to the development commissioner for handlooms.
The handlooms development commissioner recently visited Indore to encourage textile industry stakeholders to participate in the upcoming Bharat Tex 2025, a global textile expo set to take place in Delhi from February 14 to 17.
The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) has submitted a proposal to the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, aiming to promote “Textile Tourism” in Maheshwar. The villages of Khariya and Keriakhedi in Maheshwar are home to around 146 weavers.
As part of the initiative, the board plans to establish a textile village along with amenities such as a cafeteria, locally-inspired homestays, and restaurants, all of which will be managed by the local community to showcase their traditional craftsmanship.
Madhya Pradesh’s tourism department has launched its first-ever “Craft Handloom Tourism Village” in Pranpur, located in the Chanderi tehsil of Ashoknagar district. This project was made possible through a grant of approximately ₹7.45 crore, provided by the Development Commissioner for Handlooms under the Ministry of Textiles.
