Chulalongkorn University’s Halal Science Centre has launched an innovative app called “Halal Route” to simplify travel for Muslim visitors in Thailand. This user-friendly platform offers comprehensive details on Halal tourism services, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for travelers from across the globe.
The Halal Route app caters specifically to the needs of Muslim travelers, offering a wealth of accurate and user-friendly information. It provides a curated list of Halal-certified restaurants organized by cuisine, as well as details on nearby mosques and accommodations that include prayer rooms and Halal meal options. Additional features include a Qibla compass, daily prayer timings, and an Islamic calendar to enhance convenience.
Available in Thai, English, and Arabic, the app ensures accessibility for both domestic and international users. Travelers can download it for free on iOS and Android devices.
On December 19th, representatives from Malaysia and Indonesia participated in an interactive workshop on the Halal Route app during the Thailand Halal Assembly 2024 in Bangkok. The session provided insights into how the app supports travelers and boosts the local tourism industry.
Halal tourism has seen significant growth, with the IMT-GT region (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand – Growth Triangles) emerging as a key hotspot for Muslim travelers.
The global Muslim travel sector rebounded strongly in 2023, with nearly 145 million Muslim travelers, reaching approximately 90% of pre-pandemic levels, according to WebinTravel.
By the close of 2024, the number of Muslim travelers is expected to increase by 5%, potentially reaching 168 million. By 2028, this figure could soar to 230 million, generating an estimated US$225 billion in tourism spending. Thailand currently ranks 32nd on the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI 2024).
While Thailand is not a Muslim-majority nation, it has become a popular destination for Muslim tourists. The Halal Route app is designed to enhance their travel experience, addressing common challenges such as locating Halal dining options, prayer facilities, and appropriate accommodations.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Winai explains that the Halal Route app provides a comprehensive solution for travelers, offering everything from Halal food options and prayer time notifications to navigation through Google Maps. For businesses, the app presents an opportunity to tap into the expanding Muslim tourist market by aligning with Halal standards.
