Travel between Southeast Asia and the Middle East is getting easier with India as a hub.

“India needs an airline that would enable many of us to fly affordably and generate visible results. India is now developing its infrastructure much more quickly than before. By 2030, there will be 220 airports in operation, up from the current 140. Regional travel is significantly increasing, according to Sumantran, an IIT-Madras alumnus.

Airlines prefer to transfer passengers by connecting via Indian cities, therefore India is gradually becoming into a convenient hub for travel between Southeast Asia and the Middle East, according to a senior industry official. V Sumantran, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. (IndiGo Airlines), said here on Saturday that there is significant development in India and that airlines employ several local routes for connection.

Speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology’s 65th Institute Day in Madras, he said that while IndiGo Airlines began as a low-cost carrier in 2006, it has since placed the biggest single purchase in the aviation sector, purchasing 500 aircraft in France.

By international airline standards, IndiGo is a very new airline. However, he said, IndiGo’s overall offering has been reasonable pricing, polite assistance, punctual operation, and a “very well networked” route system that India required.

He said, “India is progressively becoming a handy hub for travel between South East Asia and the Middle East,” giving the example of how many airlines were sending passengers from areas like Bangkok via India to Jeddah or Dubai in the Middle East by connecting via Indian towns.

He stated, “There is a lot of development that we can see coming out of this, and it has boldly enabled us to place the greatest aircraft order in aviation history—a 500-plane order.”

Reiterating that IndiGo has the greatest network of female pilots globally, he said that the airline emits the least amount of carbon dioxide per seat-kilometer worldwide.

“IndiGo, behind Ryan Air and Delta Air Lines, is now the third most valued airline globally. We succeeded in gaining recognition as one of the largest and most valued airlines globally. The takeaway is that, first, India can teach us how to develop responsibly and do more with less, and second, many of our businesses may succeed internationally far before 2047,” he said. In the meanwhile, a number of honours were given to former IIT-Madras students in honour of their achievements in their various professions.

As a result, professors Anubhab Roy of the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering and Tarak Kumar Patra of the Department of Chemical Engineering received the Early Career Research and Development Award, which includes a prize of INR 25 lakh. Director Gankidi Madhusudhan Reddy and Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, both IIT-Madras graduates, received the 2024 “Distinguished Alumnus Award.” Mili Majumdar, the managing director of the Green Building Council of India, and Sankaran Naren, the chief investment officer of ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company Ltd., both received awards on the occasion.
