Uttar Pradesh Set To Unveil New Heritage Tourism Policy 4

Uttar Pradesh is developing a Heritage Tourism Policy focused on the adaptive reuse of historic forts, palaces, and mansions. A recent gathering in Lucknow allowed key stakeholders to collaborate on shaping the policy, which seeks to transform heritage sites into immersive tourism attractions. The initiative draws from the proven success of Rajasthan’s heritage tourism approach.

Uttar Pradesh is crafting a Heritage Tourism Policy designed to breathe new life into its historic forts, palaces, and mansions through adaptive reuse, with a focus on experiential tourism. Drawing inspiration from Rajasthan’s successful model of integrating heritage properties into tourism, the policy aims to preserve history while fostering sustainable economic growth.

On December 7, the Department of Tourism, in partnership with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), organized a Heritage Tourism Conclave in Lucknow. The event brought together more than 50 royal families, hospitality groups, investors, and consultants to discuss the draft policy and provide feedback before its final approval by the cabinet.

At the conclave, Prateek Hira, Chairman of FICCI’s UP Tourism Committee, underscored the increasing popularity of experiential travel, where tourists engage with the rich history of heritage properties. Hira pointed out that Rajasthan’s strategy of adaptive reuse has not only safeguarded historic buildings but also contributed to long-term economic viability.

Mukesh Kr. Meshram, Principal Secretary and Director General of Tourism, reassured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to supporting the initiative through infrastructure upgrades, fiscal incentives, and improved visibility with better signage. He also shared that significant heritage properties under state archaeology have been leased to hotel chains, with several projects set to launch soon.

Special Secretary for Tourism, Eesha Priya, introduced the draft policy, which includes subsidies designed to encourage participation. Meanwhile, Director of Tourism, Prakhar Misra, presented Uttar Pradesh’s diverse heritage offerings and emphasized the potential for eco-tourism and adventure activities to enhance the visitor experience.

The conclave concluded with an open feedback session led by Prateek Hira, allowing stakeholders to contribute valuable insights to help refine the policy. Uttar Pradesh aims to establish itself as a leading heritage tourism destination, preserving its historical assets while generating economic opportunities.
