A record $10.2 billion in tourist expenditure and 102,366 local employment were supported by the surge of visitors, indicating a significant economic benefit for the city. Notably, $287.4 million was contributed to the local economy in 2023 by 165,100 Indian visitors who visited Washington, DC.
According to Elliott L. Ferguson, II, President and CEO of Destination DC, “India continues to be a crucial market for Washington, DC tourism, being our #2 overseas market for visitation in 2023 and the top market for visitor spending.” According to our study, Indian tourists give Washington, DC’s arts, culture, opulent comforts, and shopping top priority. In 2024 and beyond, we want to increase our investment in order to grow our market share.
24 million of the 25.95 million visits came from inside the country, showing a complete recovery to 105% of 2019 numbers. The number of foreign tourists is also increasing; 1.95 million visitors from outside the country represent an 85% return to pre-pandemic levels and a 40% rise from the previous year. The city’s attempts to rebuild its tourist industry heavily depend on foreign visitors, who often spend more money and stay longer.
“This milestone reflects the success of our increased marketing and sales efforts,” Ferguson said. Still has to be done, however, before foreign travel is totally recovered. The extra money enables us to keep drawing tourists from abroad who make a substantial economic contribution.
